5 REASONS CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU
1. It improves life span
A study by Harvard University of men over 65 found those that ate chocolate (modest amounts, mind!) lived almost a year longer than those who didn’t eat any. This is thought to be down to the anti-oxidants in it.
2. It beats heart disease
Like red wine, chocolate contains chemicals called phenols which are believed to protect against heart disease by reducing the presence of free radicals that cause it.
3. It makes you happy!
The cocoa increases the flow of blood to the brain – dark chocolate, in particular, contains phenylethylamine, a chemical which triggers the release of endorphins.
4. It makes you more alert
The stimulants in chocolate don’t give you the jitters as there’s such a tiny amount, but will provide a quick pick-me-up.
5. It doesn’t give you spots!
Yes, that old thing you were told at school most definitely isn’t true, we now know thanks to recent scientific research.
BUT don’t eat too much of the stuff! Most of these studies are based on subjects eating just a small amount of good quality, dark chocolate (with at least 70% cocoa) every week or so. Remember, there are still calories and saturated fats in chocolate. Our advice? Choose a high-quality, dark, small easter egg and enjoy!
